Wheat straw is harvested!
In GLOPACK, bio-composites packaging material will be produced by combining bio-polyesters with ligno-cellulosic fibres. The objective of using these bio-composites is to decrease the overall cost of the final packaging by introducing low cost fillers while improving their functional properties and maintaining their biodegradability, as demonstrated in the framework of the FP7 EcoBioCAP project.
Wheat straw, an agricultural by-product, is a suitable biomass for producing these fibres. Wheat straw to be used in GLOPACK was harvested this summer in the experimental field of INRA in Melgueil (France). These straws are organic, wheat durum straws.
